Special effectsm CGI and Practical effects
For my critical investion I've chosen to look into special effects, CGI and practical effects in films. I think that there is range of ideas I can look into in this area for example, modern and older films, film critics views, how CGI and special effects work and whats the difference between technology now in films appossed to how it was 25 years ago.
Questions that people could want answered
1. Is 3D a con or does it actually make our viewing experience better?
2. Can special effects help us understand a storyline better or is it just for show or to get more views?
3. Have special effects/CGI changed the way producers and directors planned a film e.g. storyline, actors, location
4. Can using practical effects still achieve the same response on a film as it would if the film used special effects and CGI?
Secondary texts that could be useful to my investigation
Films: Avatar, Transformers, Life of PI, Star Wars, Van Halen, Terminator, Matorix, Animated films (wallace and gromit)
Can see what the special effects first hand and whether I think it makes the film better or worse
Documentaries: Special Effects: Anything Can Happen (1996), 'the making of' (any film)
Can see how the special effects are made and how much effort and detail they go into. Also how technology has changed over the years e.g. how its now different from practical effects.
Interviews: James Cameron, Mark Kermode (against 3D)
Can see what the makers of the films had in mind when making the films and how they used it to portray a character or bring a story to life. Also looking in Mark Kermode would give a alternate view into how special effects and CGI
