There are plenty of misconceptions about the online music industry. It isn't all illegal, and artists do get their fair share when legitimate download sources are used.

Online music sales surpassed physical music sales for the first time in 2011
Globally revenues grew 8% to $5.2 billion in 2011
Subscription services revenue rose from $212.4 million to $241 million- 13.5% increase
There are now over 500 legitimate online music services in 78 countries
13.4 million digital music subscribes globally, 65% increase from 2010
3.6 billion downloads in 2011, 17% increase from 2010
Digital albums are 31% of US album sales by volume
28% of internet users worldwide use unauthorized download/streaming services each month
70% pay to download music, 60% download music for free and 13% don't download music
73% belong to a social music site
The music industry has increased its digital revenues by 940% since 2004 but suffered an overall global market decline of around 30% in the same time period. The IFPI (International Federation Of The Phonographic Industry) claim piracy is a huge factor.
Worldwide, IFPI famously claimed that 85% of all digital music had been illegally downloaded.
